August 2026 is the 175th Anniversary of the arrival of the railway in Galway city. Recently redeveloped so as to be ready for the next 175 years, let’s take a look at the history of railways in Galway to date.

At its peak, the Great Northern Railway of Ireland had some 617 route miles of track, extending from Dublin to points such as Belfast, Derry, and Bundoran, and many places in between. With 2026 marking the 150th Anniversary of the creation of this concern, in this article, we shall explore the history of GNR and its legacy today.
